About:
The Italian Pavilion at the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale hosts Chance Encounter for Tevereterno. This surprising happening was conceived by composer Lisa Bielawa and Robert Hammond, creator of New York’s High Line and now President at Therme Group US.
The installation-performance features 100 red folding chairs in the garden of the Italian Pavilion, known as the “Giardino delle Vergini” at the Arsenale. The chairs move organically throughout the day, repositioned by the public, while unexpected musical events are dedicated to Tevereterno (EternalTiber), the nonprofit organization founded by artist Kristin Jones, committed to the cultural, ecological, and urban revitalization of the Tiber riverbanks in Rome, Italy.
Chance Encounter for Tevereterno is a powerful example of how artists can influence the life of public spaces. The musical piece by composer and vocalist Lisa Bielawa, combined with Robert Hammond’s urban animation performance, “Chairs,” overturns the concept of urban planning by inviting the public to interact with the process.
Chance Encounter is part of the events presented within the Italian Pavilion exhibition titled AILATI. Reflections from the Future, highlighting a commitment to an intelligent and original project of artistic revitalization and urban renewal of one of the symbolic places of Western civilization. The dramatic scale and potential future impact of Piazza Tevere, an open-air laboratory for contemporary art in the heart of Rome, drew curator Luca Molinari to invite Kristin Jones to share her dream for Rome at the 12th International Architecture Exhibition. She presented drawings and proposals for the transformation of the Piazza Tevere site.
