FADA - Festival Arts Design Acerenza
Reversing Depopulation Through Art and Design
In the high, wind-swept hills of Southern Italy, the medieval village of Acerenza stands as a monument to history. But like many of Italy’s "borghi," it has long faced the silent crisis of rural depopulation. In August 2022, Fortunato Productions stepped into this quiet landscape to launch FADA (Festival Arts Design Acerenza)—a bold experiment in community revitalization that proved even the oldest stones can pulse with new life.
Reimagining the "Struscio"
For centuries, lo struscio (the evening stroll) has been the heartbeat of Italian village life. Fortunato Productionsreimagined this tradition as a multisensory creative immersion. By reclaiming eight old spaces (the old pharmacy, the old bodega, and other old workshops) that had been shuttered and silent for decades—the project transformed the village’s abandoned real estate into a series of high-impact, immersive art installations.
This wasn’t just an exhibition; it was a scalable model for urban regeneration. By leveraging unused storefronts, FADA laid the groundwork to transform Acerenza into an international artist colony, proving that culture is the most effective tool for economic and social rebirth.
A Bridge to the Metaverse
The festival created a startling and beautiful contrast, bridging the gap between medieval architecture and the frontier of the Metaverse. Fifty digital works from international artists illuminated the stone walls, featuring 3D projections, VR experiences, and cutting-edge virtual photography.
At the center of this dialogue was a groundbreaking bio-acoustic installation by artist Sam Nester, where the real-time bio-feedback of living plants generated a haunting, ambient soundscape. Every element of the festival was tied to a central mission: a deep exploration of sustainability and environmental stewardship, attracting a new wave of specialized, eco-conscious tourism to the region.
Anatomy of the Project
Site Reclamation: The strategic transformation of 8 abandoned historical workshops into contemporary digital galleries, breathing life into the town’s ancient heart.
Multidisciplinary Curation: A global collection of 50 digital works, blending 3D projections and Metaverse experiences with the village's physical history.
Bio-Acoustic Innovation: A live ambient soundscape generated by the bio-feedback of plants, bridging the gap between nature and technology.
Thematic Focus: An immersive exploration of climate change and sustainability set against a centuries-old backdrop.
Public Integration: A free festival that turned the local community from observers into protagonists of their own town's revival.
