About the Project
Rome (Italy), 2011
Inspired by the "Pacific Trash Vortex"—a toxic, floating "plastic soup" in the Pacific Ocean estimated at 2,500 km in diameter—Plastic Vortex was launched to confront one of the planet’s most urgent ecological disasters. While the Pacific mass is the most famous, similar alarming concentrations of plastic now threaten the Mediterranean and Atlantic ecosystems, altering entire life cycles.
The project marked a high-profile return of EcoArt Project programming to Ecomondo in Rimini, the leading Euro-Mediterranean expo for the green and circular economy. Invited to the heart of this industrial summit, Plastic Vortex turned the spotlight on the plastic crisis through the channels of culture and creativity. The initiative featured a major group exhibition of international artists, a specialized conference, and an interactive educational area, all designed to transform the perception of waste into a conversation about resource recovery.
